Classy ‘Reach For The Stars’ Outfit Ideas for the Problogger Networking Party

In a little under 2 weeks time, Problogger Conference will be on and I CAN’T WAIT!

Every year, the Friday night networking party has a theme and this year it’s ‘Reach for the Stars’.

The theme can be interpreted any which way.

After looking at this thread on the Facebook PBevent page we may see some Star Wars characters and star costumes – taking the theme to the extreme.

If you are like me and want to keep your outfit classy and comfortable I’ve got some tips for you.

Before you grab that glue gun and go crazy with sequins to create a dazzling outfit, why not look in your wardrobe first?

My first thoughts when I read the theme was metallics, sequins and all shades of grey, navy and black.

If the budget is tight and you can’t afford to buy anything new, wear a little black dress and bling it up with some jewellery.

If you do have the funds and want to buy a dress in a block colour, why not consider off the shoulder or a cold shoulder style?

Wear heels that you can stand in all night. For me this may be a wedge or block heel style. If you can’t wear heels, flats are going to be your best bet. You will walk around talking to bloggers and from memory, there has been little seating at most of the venues, possibly to encourage bloggers to mingle.

The night will be a little cool on the coast so having a light jacket or a top/dress with sleeves will keep you comfortable as you network.

I’ve found some pieces that would work for the night if you truly have nothing to wear for the networking party.

Of course if you really want to get into the theme, you could hire a costume and dress us as a Hollywood star. If you do this, beware that I will find you and want to have a selfie taken with you!

Spring 2016 Colour Alert: Khaki and Moss

Last week while I was at the shops with my two younger girls, I noticed the new season colours for Spring 2016. I feel like we are revisiting autumn because the hues for this season are very much the colours we would see at that time of year. Think navy, khaki and moss, rust and terracotta, mustard and burnt orange. These are the trending colours for Spring in both fashion and homewares.

I love wearing these colours so I’m actually a little excited by this season’s offerings. But before I go off to buy some pieces to update my wardrobe, I always do an edit of my scarves and accessories to ensure I can pull off a few outfits before buying new pieces.

I haven’t always been big fan of khaki. I would wear it to work (as a plumber) and it does remind me of the army. But it’s definitely a colour that I’ve enjoyed wearing.

This season Khaki and Moss are the trending green colours. I recently bought a khaki tee and blazer which I know will get a lot of wear this season.

To add a feminine touch to khaki, wear it with a floral scarf. This is how I styled my khaki tee from Sussan. I opted to go with the XL because it’s a clingy material and I like my tees to be a bit more oversized than fit like a sausage skin.

Khaki and moss look great with white, navy, black, hot pink, burnt orange, mustard, red and purple.

I tend to wear my khaki pieces with denim, white and black pants.

Here are a mix of offerings in all shades of khaki and moss for this season. Number 2 is definitely khaki, it just looks different in the light.

Accessory Alert: Marble Fashion Jewellery

A couple of weeks ago I headed into Katies to buy a pair of the new smart jeans that Nikki from Styling You had recommended.

I had done another wardrobe edit and was in desperate need of some more jeans. I don’t like to invest in expensive jeans until I’m at the size I’d like to be. These Katies ones were a bargain at $35 because they went on sale the week after Nikki shared about them online.

Anyway, of course while I was in Katies, I browsed to see if there were any other items of interest to me and this necklace stood out.

I love accessories that are different and I do get drawn to unusual shapes. I loved the way this necklace incorporates marble and brass together. It reminded me of some of the interior trends I’ve written on various blogs about the home.

Of course I had to have it and each time I wear it, I get complimented on it.

The necklace may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I like it because it’s edgy (literally too) and it’s different to what I’ve seen around.

Marble is a versatile pattern that works well in accessories. It adds the right amount of interest to a classic outfit.

I’ve found some fabulous marble fashion jewellery if you’d like to add this to your accessory collection.

What do you think of marble accessories? Yay or Nay – or should marble be kept for home interiors instead?

How I Changed my Black Tie Dress at the Last Minute

In March when I was presented with the Female Plumbing Ambassadorship for QLD from the Master Plumbers Association of QLD, we worked out a list of events that I was to attend to. One of the events was to present the Andrea Vogler Award for a Woman in Business at the Plumbing and Gas Awards. The event was to be black tie and lounge suit for the guys.

Black tie typically means a formal dress but not a ball gown. I slightly panicked about finding the right dress because I really wanted to look professional but also stunning. But I didn’t want to spend a fortune either.

So I trawled the internet and found a gorgeous Leona Edmiston dress with sleeves. I figured the awards night would be in the middle of winter so it would be a cold night and the sleeves would mean I wouldn’t have to find a jacket or shrug to keep me warm.

I bought the dress online for around $227, reduced from $500 (It’s now down to $100 but in XXS). When I put the dress on, it fit fairly well, although it was a little big in the bust and the dress length was quite long. I also worried the dress wasn’t my style. This was the dress I bought. I think it looks much better on the model that me!

But when I put the dress on for my mum and Jacob, they agreed it was a good pick. So I happily put the dress away in anticipation for wearing it to the awards night.

Last week I showed my dad the dress and he told me he thought it was old fashioned and a colour his mother (my grandma) would wear. But he then tried to reassure me that he didn’t know much about fashion.

The thing is, I suspected the same thing. And usually my dad has a good eye for what does and doesn’t suit me. The same thing happened when I bought my formal dress 15 years ago. I had two dresses purchased and my dad didn’t like either of them, so he took me into the city to a tenancy he did the plumbing in (which happened to be an exclusive Brisbane fashion designer). A new red fabric had come in from Milan and the material was picked and the dress was made. I loved that formal dress and my dad has always took pride that he bought me my formal dress. I have still kept that dress in case I ever fit back into it. #stilldreaming
Anyway, I was a little worried about my dress and then I read the weather forecast and saw it was going to be a hot day on Friday. The last thing I wanted was to get sweat patches under my arms from being too hot in a dress.

But I didn’t have time (nor much money) to do anything about the dress and just decided to wear it. I had to get a necklace so headed to Mt Ommaney shopping centre on the Thursday and bought two necklaces from Lovisa that could be layered over each other.

Unfortunately when I put the necklaces on with the dress, they didn’t sit nicely on each other. The line on my bra could also be seen through the fabric of my dress. I resigned to going back to Mt Ommaney the next day to get a refund on one of the necklaces and find a smooth bra that didn’t have any seams or lace on the cups.

Thankfully Jacob was home so I raced to the shops to do my errands before my hair appointment at 11am. For some random reason I decided to head to City Chic as I remembered reading somewhere on the internet they sold bras.

When I went in, I saw they had a sales rack with a whole heap of formal dresses. And there was this XS black and white dress that I really liked.

City Chic Dress – One Left in XS

I whisked it to the change room and asked the shop assistant what size an XS would be. She told me it would fit a size 14. I slumped a bit because I’m usually a 16 because of my broad shoulders and I’m still little curvy in the middle.

I still tried the dress on and I’m glad I did. A few pics were sent to my dad and mum and of course Jacob, who was questioning why I was buying another dress because he really loved the green one. But I loved the black and white one more and for $50, I couldn’t put the dress back on the rack.

So I bought the dress and a strapless bra. Headed to get my hair done and put the dress on for my hairdresser who told me she loved it and we had to change my hairstyle plans. I was going to have my hair up, but because the dress was strapless, we opted to have my hair down.

My hair was put in Velcro rollers and I was given strict instructions NOT to take the rollers out until right before I headed to the event. This meant I would have to pick Esther from school with rollers in my hair and walk like this into Myer to get my makeup done.

I put my sunglasses firmly on my face and walked through the Myer Centre to the Benefit bar to get my makeup done. Benefit did my makeup when I went to the Kidspot Awards in 2014 so I knew they would do a good job. Plus the $75 paid to get your makeup is reimbursed with product.

Walking through Myer…

Kalani from Benefit did a fabulous job of covering over two pimples that decided to pop up that week. My makeup looked fabulous. We took a quick selfie in front of the Myer mannequin that had the same hairstyle as me!

Jacob then whisked me to our hotel at the Ridges where we got ready for the 6pm VIP drinks.

As promised, I took my rollers out right before we left to attend the drinks and my hair was PERFECT!

This is how I scrubbed up in the end!

Black Tie Black and White Dress

I was so glad I wore this dress because I was very hot at the awards, mingling and talking.

I knew I’d made the right decision to get a different dress. Or maybe the dress was heaven ordained just for me.

I will keep the other dress for another occasion – providing the weather allows me to wear it!

Mum’s Night Out

I get excited when a girls night out is organized and I get to go out for dinner.

On Saturday night, I got to meet up with some of the Prep mums from Esther’s school… who ironically, don’t have any kids in my daughter’s classroom.

I have been friendly with one of the mums who walks from school and literally lives around the corner from our house. Her son is in a different Prep class, but it’s been lovely to chat and smile to mums, recognising faces and names when doing drop offs and pick-ups. I was added to a Facebook post where the mums were organizing a mum’s night out and suddenly the date was picked and the table was booked at our local Vietnamese restaurant.

Even though there was only going to be a small group of us and it was going to be a casual night out for dinner, I was eager to get a little dressed up.

I put a treatment in my hair, washed it out and dried and straightened it close to salon perfection.

makeup and hair tools

I put on makeup and realized I am in DESPERATE need for new makeup. Why is it Ionly notice these things when I actually need them?

I downgraded my bag from the weekender Mary Poppins bag to a smaller handbag, discarding all the kids’ stuff. Kept the baby wipes because I just never know when I’ll need those.

downgrading handbags

I decided against wearing jeans because that is pretty much my mummy day uniform. I put on a black dress and dressed it up with a vest and boots with heels.

mums night out

As I was organizing my handbag, I had the usual sad face from Esther, who doesn’t like me going out at night. It means I can’t sing to her when she’s in bed.

esther in tears

Once the crocodile tears were on I knew it was my time to walk out that door.

out the door to mums night out

It was a great night.

I was overdressed.

But I didn’t care because I was out for dinner and talking to mums who know exactly what it’s like to raise young kids.

No topic was untouched. From gastro to sensitivity issues with kids to sharing birth stories and miraculous conceptions (my Phoebe). We laughed and laughed and pretty much talked the whole time.

It was good. So good.

And I can’t wait to do it again.

When was the last time you went out for dinner with new friends? Or even old girlfriends? Do you ever overdress… just because?
