What to keep from your work wardrobe when you become a mum

When you become a stay-at-home mum, your work clothes tend to sit on one side of your wardrobe gathering dust. You hang on to them because you know that you will be going back to work after your maternity leave. But for mums like myself, you change careers or decide to be a stay-at-home mum which means that work wardrobe is no longer required.

Work Clothes to Keep at home1

I recently had a question from a friend about what clothes to keep from your work wardrobe when you become a mum and here are my suggestions

  1. Black pant suit. Every wardrobe should have a black blazer and black pants. The Blazer can be worn to dress up jeans and the pants are a great alternative for a smart outfit out with a dressy top. If the Blazer is a boxed in style or no longer fits, donate it or sell it. The pants also need to be a slim fit. If you can’t fit into it post baby or your body shape has changed, donate it.
  2. White Shirt. Whether it’s a long sleeve or short sleeve, white shirts are a versatile top in your wardrobe. If it can’t be done up at the bust post baby, wear a white singlet underneath and wear the shirt open. If it is discoloured, get rid of it and make a note of buying a white shirt later on to replace it.
  3. Tops that can be incorporated into your casual wardrobe. Not all workplaces have a strict corporate wardrobe. You may have tops that work well worn smartly with black pants or casually with denim shorts. Only you can determine if these tops will work so be as ruthless as you like. Remember that once you become a mum, you will get marks and stains on your tops so having a few spare tops will be handy.
  4. Scarves & Accessories. I often do a yearly stocktake of my accessories and get rid of any that haven’t been worn in a year. Use the same technique like the last tip by deciding if the accessories can work for your every day wardrobe. If they can’t consider whether you would wear them on a night out?
  5. Shoes. During pregnancy feet can go up a size. Post pregnancy, your foot size may go back to what it was, but if you have had multiple children in quick succession, you may find like me, you go up a size and a half. Those shoes may not fit you anymore so it’s best to donate them or sell them if they are in good condition.

When I changed careers to become a plumber, my work clothes stayed in my wardrobe for over FOUR years. Some items I just never wore even going out on weekends, or I put on weight which meant I couldn’t fit back into them. Any clothes that were brand names like Review, Cue and Veronika Maine I sold online and others I donated to my local charity. The money I made on my work clothes was then used to buy everyday basics for my smart casual wardrobe.

Do you still have corporate work clothes hanging in your wardrobe? Had a clean out recently?

Style it Project: Falling Flowers Kimono

So I’m a bit late with this post. This feature piece for the Style It Project was for last month. It was to style the Bohemian Traders Falling Flowers Kimono. The Style It Project is run by Redcliffe Style and Kimba Likes where they choose one outfit of clothing that we can style for the month. This outfit is going to be on rotation during Autumn and Winter.

As you know I am a cape/kimono fan and have quite a few on rotation in my wardrobe. I also wear my scarves as kimonos so I can add variety to my current collection.

Just before Christmas I bought myself this red Paisley Rouge print Kimono which I was a little apprehensive in purchasing because it seemed to be a big size and I have to be careful swamping myself with too much fabric or else I look like a circus. I purposefully bought it to be worn over a red and white stripe short sleeve dress to cover my arms, but the dress revealed a bit too much of my jelly belly! Instead I teamed the kimono with my striped red tee and Katies Capris.

The drape in the kimono wears beautifully and I love mixing it with stripes or worn by itself over a white nursing singlet and cinched in with a belt.

Unfortunately after I wore this particular outfit I got covered in poo because my Phoebe did a huge poonami! I’m looking forward to wearing it more than five minutes next time I wear it again.

Ever worn a nice outfit and then get covered in poo or some other random substance your kid decides to wipe on you?

Work Wear Ideas for Back to Work Mums

The days when I wore office attire to work was over 8 years ago! EIGHT years ago.

I loved my work wardrobe and I had fun putting outfits together. When I became a plumber it was navy cotton drill pants and shirt day in and day out. While I don’t necessarilly long for those days back at work, I do sometimes wish I could dress up a little for a job. I guess this is why I try and put effort into my #everydaystyle outfits and when I go out on the weekend (which has been rare since having baby number three).

Anyway, I digress.

If you’re heading back to work after a long stint being a stay-at-home-mum you may find your wardrobe bare of work worthy attire. It’s also a time when you have a limited budget because of childcare fees, back to school expenses and possibly an incredibly high credit card bill from Christmas spending.

With this in mind I have created this capsule wardrobe with the most expensive piece being $140 and these items are available for purchase online or in stores. Don’t feel pressured to buy expensive brands to look the goods. You can create amazing outfits for little money. Back in the day when I worked in an office, most of my work wear came from Sussan, Rockmans, Kmart and Temt. (When I shopped at Temt I was pre-baby size 12!)

The size options in this work wardrobe go to a size 20 for most pieces.

The biggest issue when it comes to work wear is making your outfits look interesting and not blending into a sea of black and white. Black and white are good staples, but incorporating a bit of colour and pattern goes a long way in creating super stylish work outfits.

In this capsule wardrobe, there are 7 outfits that can all be intermixed and changed to create many more outfits depending on your preference for mixing prints or not.

I’ve only included one pair of shoes that will work with the whole wardrobe because by the time you’ve bought the clothes, not much is left for shoes. These Target shoes are a great versatile buy for $40 and once you start working and have a bit more cash to spend, you can upgrade them. Shoes worn to work get a really good work out and I found I was replacing my work shoes at least once a year.

The outfit ideas can be seen by their vertical placement and then you can mix the tops with the bottoms depending on your preference. I’ve included a mix of current trends including graphic prints, florals, bright colour and stripes.

Here are my Work Wear Ideas for Back to Work Mums

How to turn a Boxing Day Sale purchase into a worthwhile investment

Last year I abstained from going crazy at the Boxing Day sales.

We did head to the newly refurbed Westfield Garden City because we were given Myer gift vouchers for Christmas and wanted to get a Bose Sound Dock. The sound dock we wanted had sold out, but we were directed to the Hub where we could use all of our vouchers to pay for it and free delivery was included.

First thing Monday morning (Boxing Day was Friday), we received our sound dock and we’ve been using it every day since.

That kind of Boxing Day purchase is a worthwhile investment because not only was it on sale so we saved money, it was something we wanted and would use every day.

The same can be said for fashion purchases.

So many women get crazed by a sale and hoard so many clothes… but is it necessary? It’s Boxing Day Sale Madness!

I only wanted one top from Sass & Bide that I have been waiting patiently to go on sale. The moment it did go on sale with over a 50% saving, I still chewed on the purchase.

In the end I made the decision to buy the top and I’m glad I did because I love it and it’s a great tran-seasonal piece.

Sass & Bide Boxing Day Sale Top

The top is a boxed shape and is almost crop like but the sides angle beautifully to create extra coverage. I love the vertical lines and the hint of mustard in the print.

In winter I can see myself layering it over a black or white long sleeve top and in summer worn over a black tank top with shorts or capris.

This top is very much a worthwhile investment to my wardrobe and probably one of my most favourite Boxing Day sale purchases to date.

Do you shop in the Boxing Day Sales? Did you grab a bargain if you did? Please share the details in the comments below. 🙂

The versatility of a bold print skirt

Happy New Year!

I can’t believe that we are 6 days into January. It’s been hot and humid around Brisbane. I hear the heat hasn’t escaped down south either.

Whenever the heat starts to get to me, I tend to gravitate towards dresses or patterned pants and tees on the clothes front.

Today I wanted to share with you a skirt that has been a game changer to my wardrobe.

Truth be told, I’m not much of a skirt wearer. Mainly because I dislike the friction between my legs and I find that skirts don’t suit my frame as well as a dress or pants do.

Except when I wear my Keshet Midi skirt that was kindly gifted to me from The Butterfly House.

versatility of a bold print skirt Keshet

The versatility of a bold print skirt like the one I’m featuring today, means it can be worn many ways by simply changing the colour of your top.

The skirt has a stretchy waist band which makes it a great choice to wear during and post pregnancy.

The waist band can also be worn high, turning the skirt into a strapless dress.

I don’t like to wear strapless dresses when I’m a bit rounder on the shoulders, so I styled it as a skirt.

This skirt pattern isn’t currently featured on The Butterfly House webpage, but there are other colours featured online and you can contact the owner, Natalie, if she has any stock of this featured skirt.

Keshet are a Tasmanian brand of clothing and The Butterfly House is one of a couple of exclusive stockists in QLD of this brand.

Where I can I like to support local businesses when it comes to my fashion choices. The skirts come in a midi style like the one I’m wearing or a maxi skirt style.

Do you like to wear skirts? What do you tend to wear when the weather heats up?

Disclosure: I was gifted 1 Keshet skirt for editorial consideration. This post has been written in accordance to my disclosure policy.
